Tungsten Carbide

Tungsten Carbide and Tungsten materials are used for energy exploration and manufacturing applications. The Fang group developed a functionally graded cemented tungsten carbide (FG WC-Co) technology which has been licensed to multiple corporations including those in US, Europe, and China for different field-of-uses. FG WC-Co is also being commercially produced by Heavystone Laboratory LLC, a spin-off company from the University of Utah.

The Fang group is also funded by the Office of Science at DOE and Army SBIR program to develop ultrafine grain tungsten for fusion energy reactors or applications requiring high kinetic energies. A new tungsten alloy with density near that of pure tungsten has been demonstrated to have fracture toughness that is three times higher than that of pure W materials without thermal mechanical working. The total funding for this project has exceeded $2.4M.
